In addition to free radicals produced by pollutant exposure, the human body is constantly producing free radicals during a process used to turn food into energy, called oxidative phosphorylation.

Everyone produces some free radicals naturally in their body through processes like exercise or inflammation. This is normal and part of the body’s intricate system of keeping itself healthy.
You may also be exposed to free radicals in the environment. Some sources include:

A diet high in sugar, fat, and alcohol may also contribute to free radical production.

Antioxidants are molecules that fight free radicals in your body. Free radicals are compounds that can cause harm if their levels become too high in your body. They’re linked to multiple illnesses, including diabetes, heart disease, and cancer.

Prolonged oxidative stress can damage your DNA and other important molecules in your body. Sometimes it even leads to cell death. Damage to your DNA increases your risk of cancer, and some scientists have theorized that it plays a pivotal role in the aging process.

Red light, at specific wave lengths, is readily absorbed by chromophores in the mitrochondria of the body’s cells, which activates metabolic energy processes. Red and near-infrared  wavelengths of light promote ATP production, which boosts energy transport within cells, leading to increased cell proliferation. This boot in the body’s natural healing cycle helps reduce inflammation and promotes healing of damaged tissue.

Red light is different from other forms of light because it penetrates deeper into the skin. Blue and ultraviolet light mainly affects the upper layers of the skin, while red light can be absorbed by cells deep in the body.

Red light therapy is also called photobiomodulation (PBM) therapy because of the change in the body induced by light.

PBM therapy is dose-dependent. Accurate dosage is a combination of wavelength and exposure time.
